 Scripture – Matthew 15:8

These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me;

 Reflection – Are You ‘Phoning It In?’

I need to read the Bible or do some sort of devotion to maintain my connection with God. I suspect this is the same reason you are reading this now. But to be honest, sometimes I rush through it. I put God on my timetable. I am going through the motions, but not expecting the wonderful blessing of the affirmation, guidance, or challenge of the Holy Spirit. I am not giving my heart space to receive the goodness of God.

 In the above passage, Jesus quoted the prophet Isaiah to challenge the religious leaders. Their traditions were superseding the word of God. They were going through the motions. They were phoning it in. They were serving their needs instead of following God’s lead. I get it. When I hurry through my devotions, I make ‘Time’ my god, my idol. I cheat myself and my God.

 Are there things that stand in the way of your relationship with God? Are there things you do which look good on the surface, but you are not doing with passion and care? Does your heart need and infusion of the Spirit?

 Our Prayer

God our parent, whose desire it is to shower good upon Your children, we confess we are too often caught up in materialism, self-image, schedules and worries. We confess we fail to give You our heart. God, help renew my sense of purpose and my connection with You, so I may honor you with my heart as well as with my lips, in all You call me to do. Amen.
