Scripture – 1 Corinthians 13:7

It (love) bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Reflection – The Endless Power of Love

This passage would be easy to dismiss as more ‘poetic soar’ than actual literal truth. However, there is much more here than just lofty musings.

Love bears all things – Paul, in another passage talks about carrying our own loads, but bearing each other’s burdens. My problems are my problems. When I share them with people who care about me, they are still my problem (my load), but somehow the load seems lighter when I share the burden it is with others. They feel for me, and it is energizing.

Love believes all things – Not everything we say, especially when we are in distress, is technically true. But when we learn to hear what people mean or what they are getting at versus what they are actually saying, we discover the truth about what is important to them.

Love hopes all things – Hope is not a wish from within, but rather believing we are connected with the love of God and his desire to save us, heal us and be with us eternally. Even, and maybe especially, when we do not know ‘what’ to hope for, we can still have hope.

Love endures all things – Need I explain this during a pandemic? We are separated from those we love. Yet love does not recede.

 Prayer:

Almighty God, you are the ground of our being and our reason for hoping in the future. We know we are limited human beings, but when we are with you, we are empowered to do so much more. Help us be to those around us, people who bear all things, believe all things, and hope all things, so that we might be the loving people you call us to be. Amen.
